Picture
Our March meeting featured a very special kindergarten teacher, mentor, and SJSRA member, Tricia Marles. Her students gain so much from her approach for generating ideas. Due to popular demand Tricia will present more ideas about primary writing at future meetings.

Spark the Fire to REad!

Picture
Last summer's Flip and Sip member kickoff event featured an inspirational must read, Igniting a Passion for Reading, by Steven L. Layne. Now we are back to school, and our "Spark the Fire to Read" literacy campaign is spreading throughout two counties. Literacy leader, Lori Mariano's presentation sent out sparks!

Picture

Lori Mariano leads the charge at Adkison Elementary School in Ceres, California. She and her enthusiastic team of teachers are into their second year of a cultural turnaround. They create many ways for students to experience the joy of reading.

Walking on the campus before school and at recess you will see students running to an open classroom door to join the morning read aloud session. At recess, you will see a flock of students selecting books to read with their principal out on the green grass. Then there's the Hot Read, where teachers and students recommend books they love and know others will too. This initiative is not a passing fancy! The transformation in culture takes place when a staff bands together promoting a love for literacy.  Want to join our "Spark the Fire to Read" campaign? It all starts with a great read, Steven Layne's book, Igniting a Passion for Reading.
